Weekend Fights Preview

No UFC Card This Weekend

Giphy

This is a rare UFC bye week. We only have a handful of them a year, and boy do they feel lonely. As you sit down this Saturday night and try to act like you like your friends - or god forbid baseball, as much as your UFC Saturday nights, take solace in the fact that we are back to a stacked Pay Per View event in two weeks.

With that being said we will have a shorter than usual MMA Snacks newsletter this Friday and Monday without much to preview or review. But hey maybe we can sprinkle in some boxing or even some cage warriors talk to keep your beaks wet.

Fight Schedule

Boxing: Gervonta Davis vs. Rolando Romero on Saturday 5/28/2022

Main Card - 9:00 EST - PPV on Showtime

Main Event - 11:15 EST - PPV on Showtime

Lock of the Week

Parlay (-120): Gervonta Davis by KO/TKO/DQ (-400) WITH Erislandy Lara by KO/TKO/DQ (-215)

Obviously we have to keep the hot hand going with another two leg parlay, UFC bye week or not. And below we have all the stats and facts we examined to make this parlay a lock.

Some stats behind the reasoning for these picks:

  • I don't know many boxers, but I do know Gervonta "Tank" Davis

  • We have hit two leg parlays two weeks in a row now

  • You have a problem if you're taking these picks with me this week

Open Scoring

UFC

I have a feeling this will not be the last time we write about the open scoring debate. Lately there have been many fights which have resulted in controversial split decisions. This has sparked a debate over how to fix judging because these decisions leave the fighters confused - and actually with less money because most only receive half of their total pay if they do not win (crazy that is still a thing, right?)

Fixing judging is a much tougher issue that will never be perfect because at the end of the day - it is a judgement call. So what do we do to stop these fighters from being so shocked and screwed when the winner is announced? Telling them the score after each round so they know where they stand - open scoring. After all, all the other major sports keep score live so the teams know where they stand.

The list of pro's and con's of open scoring could stretch a mile long but lets summarize a few of the main points.

Pros:

  • Fighters aware of if they are up or down in the fight

  • Holds the judges more accountable for scoring the fight correctly

Cons:

  • Could result in stalling if the fighter knows he is winning

  • May take away from the iconic moments/drama of reading the winner after the fight
